Charan Singh served twice as chief minister of India’s biggest agrarian state, Uttar Pradesh, where he played a major role in shaping land reforms.
He was the person who serves behind the several major farmer-forward Bills, including the Land Utilisation Bill of 1939 and the Debt Redemption Bill in 1939.
While serving as agriculture minister in 1952, he abolish the zamindari system in uttar pradesh.
He served as the 5th Prime Minister of India and also as a Kisan Leader for a very short period from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980 in India. He had introduced several welfare schemes for the farmers to improve their living standard and also wrote several books on depicting the farmer's problems and also various solutions to improve their lives .He also worked on bringing small and marginal farmer issues to the forefront.
Some of his most popular writings: ‘India’s Poverty and its Solution’, ‘Abolition of Zamindari’, ‘Peasant Proprietorship or Land to the Workers’, ‘Co-operative Farming X-rayed’ and ‘Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum’.
To spread awareness about farmer’s issues in the country, Charan Singh founded the Kisan Trust on December 23 1978 a non-political, non-profit making body — with the aim of educating India’s rural masses against injustice, and fostering solidarity among them.
So , in 2001, the government of India decided to celebrate kisan diwas on mark of Charan Singh's birth anniversary.
